Scars & Injuries

When skin tissue is damaged, the body repairs the wound by increasing the production of collagen at the site of the wound, creating a scar. Several types of scars can be seen. A KELOID is a large, irregular scar that outgrows the site of initial surgery. A HYPERTROPHIC SCAR is a raised or overgrown scar that remains within the confines of the initial injury or cut. Hypertrophic scars are usually raised and firm, and can sometimes be itchy. The tendency toward the development of large hypertrophic scars may be inherited.

We specialize in the treatment of scars. Many raised scars can be flattened quite readily. Depressed scars can be raised using a combination of subcision, or lifting of the scar, together with injection of dermal fillers, like Collagen or Restylane. Red scars can be treated with vascular lasers to decrease the redness. Wide or otherwise unsightly scars can often be successfully treated with scar revision surgery, whereby the old scar is removed and the skin repaired using a specialized technique. Dr. Ilya Reyter specializes in scar revision surgery and is an expert in the use of lasers for scar reduction.
